Class Announcements Final thoughtsThe school year is over. Though everyone says this, I am truly amazed at how quickly it has gone by. Teaching is all together different than I thought it would be. As a frustrated college student, I finally decided on an education degree because I love to teach and I want to help people. There is something exciting about the idea of helping to shape and grow a young mind into a more educated and mature state. I remember the week before school looking at a class list and thinking 'I am going to hurt some feelings because it will take me awhile to memorize 21 names". It took me 1 day. Since that time I have had the unique opportunity to be a part of your children's lives in a deeper and more real way than I would have thought possible. I can honestly say I have seen each and every one of them laugh, cry, become angry, look confused, and every now and then I have seen that little light come on as new information and past schema connect- that mysterious moment where true understanding is born. I got to spend approximately 40 hours a week with your kids and in that time they shared with me the things that really mattered to them. A few of the more important things I learned are as follows:
1. A loose tooth is a big deal- whether you believe in the tooth fairy or not. 2. grades usually have no meaning until the day report cards go home- then they are very important. 3. there is an unspoken respect among 3rd graders, everyone cries sometimes- and that's ok. 4. Every word a teacher says will be analyzed, even if misheard. 5. At the end of the day, every kid wants to make some grown up proud. I want to thank each and every one of you for allowing me to be a part of your children's lives this year. It was a wonderful first year of teaching. I feel I did many things well, and I know that I made quite a few mistakes. I want you to know that I never took my role in their lives lightly, and I pray that if nothing else eaeveryone in my class felt important and loved. I owe so many of you thanks for your communication with me, your support, and your patience. I have been so blessed by your kids. Make the most of your time, I am not a parent but I would imagine that like the school year, the time you have goes faster than you might think. I gave you questions to ask during our Goals Day conference. The more your child practices, the better he/she will get. We want our kids to visualize what he/she reads. Remind your child to make a movie in his/her head as he/she reads and ask your child to describe the pictures.
Your child should be taking his/her library books home to read. Your child needs to be reading chapter books and taking AR tests on them.
Thank you for all that you do!
